Why paint your cabinets?

At GJ’s Painting we paint a lot of cabinets! Painted cabinets look great, they are very common in new homes nowadays and are a great way to change the look and feel of your kitchen or bathroom. But…

Is it wrong to paint over finished wood?

A lot of people are reluctant to paint their old cabinets and cover up the finished wood. That is very understandable, finished wood looks great and never goes out of style. The problem is when the old finish starts to get damaged.

Wooden cabinets that are stained and varnished look great when they are new but there are lot of things in a kitchen that will cause them to be damaged over time. There is water damage, steam damage from electric kettles, deep fryers and air fryers, the daily mess from cooking and the wear of harsh cleaners.

Over the years wear and tear can ruin the finish on old wooden cabinets and leave your kitchen looking worn and shabby. You can go from having a kitchen that you like to show off to one that you avoid having people in anymore.

Why not just re-stain?

Once that original finish is damaged its pretty hard to get it looking good again. Re-finishing individual doors or fixing bad spots doesn’t work too well because it never really blends in with the rest.

Re-staining and varnishing the whole set of cabinets requires A LOT OF WORK! First you need to take off all of the old stain and varnish.

This is a long and messy process of either scraping using chemical strippers or with many hard days spent sanding with a power sander.

A large modern kitchen often has 30 plus doors with spindles, crown and many decorative details. By the time you are done taking off the old stuff and re-finishing(or paying someone to do it) you might be wishing that you just built a new set!

If I’m going to invest $$$ into my kitchen why not just build new cabinets?

Another option is to get new cabinets built. I have had a number of clients who were on the fence about building new cabinets or having them painted. I have often heard prices between $15,000 and $30,000 even for modest size kitchens. I am sure it can go even higher for large kitchens.

The solution to this problem that we offer is simple. You pick out the colors that go with your new design idea and leave the rest to us!

We will take down your doors, remove all the old hardware, repair the damaged areas and make them look like new again!

Our special surface prep and spraying process (developed from doing this a while lot) will give your cupboard doors a professional and durable finish. We’ll also do it with very little disruption and for a fraction of the price of building new!
